Ms. Dakis on Literacy Skills
By William C. Literacy is one of the core classes
that requires a wide variety of skills and abilities. Sometimes it may seem fun
and easy, but no matter how enjoyable Literacy may be, students are still
working on learning. Literacy teacher Ms. Dakis shared her opinions on student
Literacy skills this year.
“I think 6th grade
students need to refine their critical skills,” Ms. Dakis explained. “As they
read, they need to engage in accountable discussions that are meaningful and
thoughtful. I have complete confidence that 6th graders will greatly
strengthen skills in writing. It is my
hope that students will learn how important it is to support opinions and
impressions expressed in writing with evidence from related text.”
Students come into a new grade with
all the experience and learning they had from their past grades. “Students are
reading more often now than ever before.
They seem to understand the importance of good reading habits,” Ms.
Dakis continued, while taking a sip of the Coke and chewing sour sticks as she
thought of her answers carefully.
“Everybody’s different! I have 6th graders from elementary
with a variety of strength and talents. I’m amazed by the sophisticated prose
writing style several of my students have.
Others dazzle with figurative languages.”
Of course each unit of study brings
different challenges. The 6th graders have been working on vignettes
recently, which requires a level of creativity as well as skill. “Overall, I am very pleased by the amount of
enthusiasm students bring to our vignette unit,” Ms. Dakis said. “They have
such interesting stories to tell.” |
